Lacrosse History: Historical Facts About Lacrosse
Lacrosse has often been looked at as an East Coast sport but in the new millennium it has reached across the nation. More and more colleges are adding lacrosse to it’s intercollegiate lists and with nation television networks covering more games every year, it is spreading like wild fire. Many people are unaware of how lacrosse actually started in the states however.
The game is rooted from American Indians and was used for a variety of settlements in the past. Instead of war, tribes in Native America used lacrosse as a game to settle disputes. The rules were obviously different than today’s game but the Indians indeed did have sticks that rooted the idea of the modern lacrosse stick. It was said that they played on horses and teams were limitless meaning that the amount of players could be in the thousands. The goals were believed to be up to a mile wide and the field could be very long as well.
When rival tribes turned to lacrosse to settle wars or disputes it is believed that the losing team would be killed or marked in some way. Usually killed. Instead of the actually physical war, they would turn to lacrosse and that would be their war.
