Wiles joins training camp this week in preparation for 2009 season

TORONTO – The Toronto Rock signed former San Jose Stealth forward Luke Wiles to a one year deal this week pending league approval.

Wiles was acquired by the Rock in September during a draft day deal in exchange for a 2008 first round pick with the San Jose Stealth.

“Luke is a very talented player and will be counted on to be a big contributor to our Rock offence” said Mike Kloepfer Director of Lacrosse Operations for the Rock.

Picked up by the Stealth in a mid-season trade in 2006 with the Philadelphia Wings, Wiles earned NLL All Rookie Team honours in 2006 and tallied 54 points (20 goals, 34 assists) last season with the Stealth.

In 2007, Wiles accumulated 30 goals, 52 assists and 95 loose balls in the regular season, a team high for San Jose that year.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed due to club policy.

Rock training camp continues this week as management prepares to submit a final 23 man roster to the NLL in early December.

Training camp underway after a busy weekend in Six Nations

TORONTO –The Toronto Rock Lacrosse Club is excited to announce they have signed forward Lewis Ratcliff to a three year deal.  Due to club policy terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Ratcliff, who joined the Rock roster mid-season last year after a trade with the Calgary Roughnecks, tallied 42 goals and 50 assists during the 2008 season, 28 of those points (13 goals, 15 assists) in just five games with the Toronto Rock.

Last week, Ratcliff was also announced as fulfilling a Rock leadership role for the upcoming season as the second assistant captain with Blaine Manning alongside newly appointed captain, Chris Driscoll.

“Lewis is one of the top young stars in the League and we are happy to have come to an agreement on a long term contract with him.  We look forward to him helping the Rock be a serious contender for years to come” said Mike Kloepfer, Director of Lacrosse Operations for the Toronto Rock.

A Victoria, B.C. native, Lewis has also made a temporary move to Toronto with his wife and son and will remain in the city throughout the season. After signing with the Rock back in March, Ratcliff would fly into Toronto for practice last season on Wednesdays and stay in the city for either a weekend home game or to travel with the team on the road before flying back home on Sundays.

“I am very excited to be in Toronto and looking forward to a full season with my new teammates” Ratcliff said.

Ratcliff was among many other players in Six Nations this weekend as the Rock kicked off their training camp in preparation for the club’s eleventh season.

“We have the most competitive camp during my time as coach with the Rock” said Coach Glenn Clark.  “There is a real strong showing by the young players at camp and it is creating an intense environment” Clark added.

The Rock will continue their remaining training camp sessions divided between the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations and the Scarborough Soccer Centre throughout November and December before a final 23-man roster is submitted to the NLL in early December.

Clark says “players realize that jobs are up for grabs.  Returning veterans and rookies alike are trying to make a statement.”

The Scarborough Soccer Centre will be the practice facility for the Toronto Rock once training camp concludes and the team begins regular practices in December.

NEW YORK, Oct. 31 (UPI) — The New York Mets have picked up
the 2009 signing option of first baseman Carlos Delgado. It was
worth $12 million.
“We wanted to let him know as quickly as allowed that we
wanted him back,” General Manager Omar Minaya told New York Newsday.
The move followed the veteran slugger’s torrid second half this
season.
In the final 85 games, the 36-year-old Delgado batted .308
with 27 home runs and 80 RBI.
Despite heating up, the Mets missed the postseason for the
second straight year.

115 RBI, and a .271 batting average.
In 16 major league seasons, the native of Aguadilla, Puerto
Rico, has compiled 469 homers, 1,489 RBI, and a .280 average in
2,009 games with Toronto, Florida and the Mets.

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 31 (UPI) — The World Series champion
Philadelphia Phillies received a hero’s welcome Friday afternoon at
a citywide celebration by exuberant fans.
The event kicked off around noon, with trains and buses
filled by thousands of raucous baseball fans.
Outfielder Pat Burrell, the longest tenured Phillie, sat up
front on a special horse-drawn carriage at the head of the line, and
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter hoisted the Commissioner’s Trophy.
By beating the Tampa Bay Rays in five games, the Phillies
secured the first professional sports title in the City of Brotherly
Love since 1983 Wednesday night.
“We’re starving, we’re hungry,” slugger Ryan Howard said
after winning the title.
“How can I celebrate when the nation’s economic output is
the weakest it’s been since the third quarter of 2001,” asked a more
subdued Series MVP Cole Hamels during an appearance Thursday night
on the David Letterman show.
